Google Bloogle

Is it just me? I cannot read an article about Google without running into the words "Microsoft" and/or "IBM." How can Google be competing against these companies and others like them if they seem to be in different technology fields? If Microsoft sells packaged software and IBM and other companies sell business computing hardware and software, how can Google be "competing" with them if their business is mainly an Internet search engine that sells ad space? I understand that technology is transparent and companies can expand into other markets but to me it seems the only connection these companies have are their rate of innovation (in their own tech fields). Where does Google rank among other large tech firms such as Microsoft and IBM as far as earning power? What exactly are they doing in China? How can they operate in a country that intentionally suppresses the distribution of information?
